How to Prepare Your Family for a Photoshoot on Oahu

Planning a family photoshoot on Oahu is an exciting experience, but preparation is key to ensure that everyone has a great time and the results are stunning. Here’s a guide to help you prepare your family for a smooth, enjoyable photoshoot on Oahu.

1. Choose the Right Time and Location

  • Timing is Everything: The best times for photoshoots on Oahu are early morning or late afternoon right before sunset when the lighting is soft and golden. Avoid midday when the sun is harsh, and shadows are more pronounced.

  • Pick a Family-Friendly Location: Oahu offers diverse backdrops, from the sandy beaches of Waikiki and Lanikai to the lush greenery jungle of Manoa. Consider your family’s preferences—whether they want a beach, garden, or urban setting.

  • Travel Considerations: If you're visiting Oahu, be mindful of travel times to the shoot location. Plan for a relaxed start to avoid stress.

2. Coordinate Outfits for a Cohesive Look

  • Choose Comfortable, Coordinated Clothing: Select outfits that complement each other without being overly matchy-matchy. Opt for neutral tones, soft pastels, or vibrant colors that work well with the natural beauty of Oahu.

  • Avoid Distracting Patterns: Avoid clothing with large logos, bold stripes, or overly busy patterns that could distract from the beauty of your family and the surroundings. Solid colors or subtle patterns work best for a timeless look. We know you want to show off your new aloha shirt but maybe save it for the office.

  • Consider the Environment: If you’re shooting on the beach, avoid high heels or uncomfortable shoes. Choose clothing that allows movement and comfort for both children and adults.

3. Prepare for the Climate and Weather

  • Weather Variability: Oahu’s weather can be unpredictable. It’s always a good idea to check the forecast before the shoot, but also be prepared for sudden rain showers or humidity. Bring an umbrella or light jacket if necessary.

  • Sun Protection: Hawaii’s sun can be intense. Be sure to apply sunscreen before the shoot to prevent sunburn, and bring sunglasses or hats to protect from direct sunlight between shots.

  • Stay Hydrated: The tropical climate can get hot, so bring water bottles to stay refreshed throughout the shoot.

4. Plan for Kids and Pets

  • Bring Snacks and Entertainment: If you have young children, bring some snacks or toys to keep them entertained during breaks or for me to hold over my camera to get your kids attention.  This will help maintain their energy and mood during the shoot.

  • Bring Extra Clothes: For children (and pets, if applicable), pack extra clothes in case of spills, sand, or dirt. Oahu’s beaches can get messy, so having backups ensures you’re prepared for any situation.

  • Pet-Friendly Photoshoots: Oahu’s beaches are often pet-friendly, but be sure to confirm ahead of time. If bringing pets, pack any essentials they might need, like water and leashes.

5. Communicate

  • Discuss Expectations: Before the shoot, discuss the vibe you're hoping for—whether it’s candid moments, posed family shots, or a mix of both. Feel free to screenshot photo examples of what you like.

  • Ask for Guidance: Don’t hesitate to ask for advice on outfits, locations, or other details that might enhance the final result.

  • Set Realistic Expectations: Understand that some family members may not be in the mood for photos, especially if there are young children or pets involved. A great photographer will know how to work with these challenges and capture the best moments.

6. Relax and Have Fun

  • Be Flexible: The goal of your family photoshoot on Oahu is to capture moments of genuine connection and joy. Be flexible with time and let your family’s personality shine through naturally.

  • Smile and Enjoy the Process: Sometimes the best photos happen when everyone is laughing, joking, or playing together. Relax, enjoy the beauty of Oahu, and let the photographer capture those authentic moments.

  • Don’t Rush: Allow for breaks, especially with young children. Taking time to relax will lead to better results and a more enjoyable experience.

These are tips that I have learned over the years of being a photographer on Oahu. By following these tips, your family will be ready to enjoy a stress-free and fun photoshoot on the beautiful island of Oahu. The key is to prepare ahead of time, keep the mood light, and focus on enjoying the experience together as a family!
